This probably should have been completed before, you know, 2005 *ended*, but I'm lazy. I'm on break, I'm allowed. Stolen from
esinclair, because it IS a good meme.
1. What did you do in 2005 that you'd never done before?
Got a cat. Did tequila shots. Finished a year of law school. Earned absolutely no income for the first time since I was sixteen.
2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
No. And, since I clearly lack resolve, no.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.
5. What places did you visit?
San Diego, California; Puerto Nuevo, Mexico; Northampton, Massachusetts; Asheville, North Carolina; New York and Brooklyn, New York; Syracuse, Fulton, and Oswego, New York.
6. What would you like to have in 2006 that you lacked in 2005?
An income. A life.
7. What date from 2005 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
None come to mind, which would kind of imply a lack of memorable dates.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Not failing out of law school.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Despite being fully aware of them, I have exactly the same internal conflicts and issues that I had a year ago.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Two colds and a sinus infection - pretty good, for me.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
My ipod, though that was technically a gift. Runners up, and also gifts: the first seasons of Veronica Mars and Joan of Arcadia; the extended versions of the Lord of the Rings movies; and the Adams-Jefferson letters--because the homosocial love between our forefathers was tragicbeautifulHOT.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My mom, for being a great mom. N, for moving to Philadelphia (!). H, for re-entering my life and filling up that empty place. My sister, for finally doing work that makes her happy and continuing to build a lovely home of relatively functional nuclear familydom. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, for continuing to make me laugh at what would otherwise make me want to move to Canada.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and/or depressed?
The religious right, for being neither genuinely religious nor "right". Pretty much the entire Bush administration, for making a mockery of my country and the "democracy" they're supposedly trying to spread - last time I checked, democracy means this is not a dictatorship, and the executive branch doesn't get to circumvent Congress, the courts, and the separation of powers because you know they won't approve, say, your wiretapping scheme.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Villanova Law, baby. And it wasn't even my money. It was theoretical money, and I get to pay it all back for the next fifty years.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
OMG Britney 'n Kevin & their baby of course!!!!!!! & Brangelina!!! And omg TOMKAT!!!!!!!
Oh, wait, no. That's just what I was *supposed* to get excited about.
16. What song will always remind you of 2005?
"On the Bus Mall," the Decemberists. (Oh, the sweet tortured runaway boy prostitute angst!)
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?
Happier, but that's really only since I started my second year of law school. But I'm very thankful that it got so much better.
ii. thinner or fatter?
Considering my diet and lack of exercise, I really should be fatter, but I managed to slide by on my metabolism for another year. That is to say, I remain the same.
iii. richer or poorer?
Ah ha ha ha. So much poorer.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Earning money.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Spending money.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
My mom and I spent Christmas with my sister, brother-in-law, and nephews, and it was lovely.
21. How will you be spending New Year's?
I hung out with N and her friend C, and totally remembered why champagne is EVIL. (But kinda fun.)
22. Did you fall in love in 2005?
"I miss that stupid ache."
No.
23. How many one-night stands?
Zero, because I've never seen the appeal.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
Well, for well-roundedness and ability to make me laugh and cry and shout "damn you, Berlanti" at the tv screen, it was Everwood. Best new discovery (and most addictive) was Veronica Mars. And best finale EVER was definitely Six Feet Under.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
How very positive for my karma that I can truthfully say no.
26. What was the best book you read?
The first half of my Constitutional Law casebook. And no, I am not kidding.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Neko Case Neko Case Neko Case Neko Case Neko Case oh the LOVE.
28. What did you want and get?
A cat.
29. What did you want and not get?
Another cat. A wealthy patron. A sekrit superpower.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
What does it say about me that all I can come up with are Serenity and Ice Princess? I mean the first is totally respectable, but the latter...
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Did embarassing but fun touristy things in Philadelphia with my mom and my sister and her family. 24.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
See "wealthy patron."
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2005?
Velvet, corduroy, tweed, brown, jewel tones.
34. What kept you sane?
Zoloft. And,
January - May, Christine and my mom. May - August, my co-interns and the fact that I was moving. September - present, actual life satisfaction and genuine happiness.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Stephen Colbert. It's the ears.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
All of them.
37. Who did you miss?
Everyone.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
Three-way tie - Monica, Christina, and Lindsay, my WAA co-interns.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2005:
It's so cliche it's embarassing - but I really came to believe that everything happens for a reason. That is to say, I finally learned a little bit about faith.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
I certainly haven't been shopping for any new shoes,
and I certainly haven't been spreading myself around.
I still only travel by foot and by foot it's a slow climb,
but I'm good at being uncomfortable so I can't stop changing all the time.
I noticed that my opponent is always on the go,
and won't go slow so as not to focus and I notice
he'll hitch a ride with any guide as long as they go fast from whence he came,
but he's no good at being uncomfortable so he can't stop staying exactly the same.
If there was a better way to go then it would find me,
I can't help it, the road just rolls out behind me.
Be kind to me or treat me mean,
I make the most of it, I'm an extraordinary machine.
I seem to you to seek a new disaster every day,
You deem me doomed to clean my view and be at peace and lay.
I mean to prove I mean to move in my own way,
and say I've been getting along for long before you came into the play.
I am the baby of the family
it happens so, everybody cares,
and wear the sheeps' clothes while they chaperone.
Curious you're looking down your nose at me while you appease,
courteous to try and help but let me set your mind at ease:
If there was a better way to go then it would find me,
I can't help it, the road just rolls out behind me.
Be kind to me or treat me mean,
I make the most of it, I'm an extraordinary machine...
