wherein despite selfishness, I side with the writers
Um, so I'm totally spamming livejournal. Yeah.
I've decided I won't freak out about the writer's strike until it's been going on for at least two months. Once I actually went and found out why they're striking, I was pretty sympathetic to their cause.
It's not even the break in new episodes that'll start to occur in a couple of months once they run out of new scripts that worries me, but what thespawns of Satan networks will do to fill the gaps. There's one thing I absolutely DO NOT want to see:
More reality shows. Because, well. I think that one speaks for itself. I've grown fond of a couple over the years since my initial OMG REALITY SHOWS MUST DIE phase, but that doesn't mean I don't still think they're evil or don't hate myself a little for falling victim to them.
I also would prefer not to see endless reruns of stuff that just aired two weeks ago.
On the other hand, I've seen speculation for other gap-filling fodder that doesn't sound at all like a bad idea. Like, bring in more Canadian and British shows! Maybe even bring over Series 4 of Doctor Who and Series 2 of Torchwood without the almost one year gap between the UK and US airing!
Or, bring back some high-quality but long-dead shows for a full rerun schedule. And no, believe it or not, not everything is available on DVD. Everwood, for instance, one of the most brilliant shows that ever brillianted, only has one of four seasons available. And that's a recently dead show. What other forgotten gems are out there?
Or, you know. We could all just take a break from the telly and read more.
... ah hah hah hah! Yeah. Okay. Kidding.

Well, I can't speak for Britian, but as far as Canada goes? There's not really a whole lot of stuff actually produced up here (and I should point out that it's American reality shows that seems to delay what little there is for Summer airing in many cases), and in at least three cases those season orders are 12-13 eps max. At least in terms of stuff currently in production. There must be older stuff to draw from though... Madison, Northwood, Edgemont could all be thrown on the N if they haven't aired down there already.
That being said, some of what's up here is fabulous stuff... Little Mosque on the Prarie, Corner Gas. The Rick Mercer Report is kind of like a Canadian Daily show, only once a week. I'd be thrilled if we got a wider audience for this stuff... then maybe we'd start making a bit more Canadian TV shows in Canada. Out side of CBC, which is government funded, the other networks (not specialty channels like Showcase that did co-produce QaF for example.) up here are so busy airing US stuff that they don't bother with originals as much as they should. I could rant about things being pulled mid season to accomodate some reality show or another coming from the states only to have to wait 8 months for it to come back.
Sadly British Columbia's film industry, with a very small number of exceptions, is pretty much US so economy wise things may start to suck. But I do support the writers in what they're doing and I'll watch my box sets over whatever stop gap reality hits the airwaves come January. I'm about due for a Buffy rewatch, anyway.

HEE. I love it when we think alike.
I'm actually kind of looking forward to some primetime shows going off the air. I don't want any of my beloved shows to fail (FNL, SPN, Pushing Daisies, Chuck - I think I'm most terrified for Chuck, actually, it's really wormed its way into my heart and I love it deeply), but I don't mind a several-week hiatus, either. I'm looking forward to having the time to catch up on some series I've always wanted to watch, but never had the time to do so (Dr. Who, for example). And I'm doubly behind the strike if it finally gets writers some much-deserved respect. It's about time that hollywood learned that if you don't have a good story, you don't have a good film/TV show/whatever.
...sorry, that came out harsher than I intended. But you know what I mean.
Go Writers! Fight the Power! *fistpump*
