I think I'm getting sick. And it's December! BREAKING NEWS: THE EARTH IS ROUND.
I'm not usually into vids, but some of the Supernatural ones have made me rethink that position a little. A couple of recs, neither of which I think you necessarily have to be a fan of the show to appreciate.
First there's "Women's Work," (N! The music is Hole!) which is a visceral reminder of the prevalence of the violent/sexualized female image in popular media generally and Supernatural specifically. And I adore Supernatural, don't get me wrong. So do the creators of the vid. I actually think Supernatural, for all that its primary focus is on its two male leads, has had a good record of featuring very interesting, dynamic female guest stars. (And it gave us Ellen - even if it took her away again. Effing CW and its ageist bullshit.) But that doesn't mean it's not guilty of adding plenty to the vast repository of gendered, sexualized violence in popular media.
Being a media fan and being a feminist means I often have to reconcile the two, because they're so often in serious conflict. Too often, maybe, it means ignoring the feminist voice in my head - I usually justify it as merely another act of suspending disbelief, but it's a bad idea to suspend it completely. And you know, I don't, but sometimes I could let myself be a little more critical - it's just a very fine line to walk before you have to start feeling so disgusted with EVERYTHING that you can't enjoy ANYTHING.
And this second one's going to seem, um, hypocritical? after the last one, BUT! It's too awesome. And most of the violence, at least, is aimed at the boys. And it's a Christmas vid! Heh, um, kinda. I mean, in the same way the last episode of Supernatural was a Christmas episode - complete with fun Christmassy torture!
Carol of the Supernatural
Action-packed, creepy, and delicious. Also very fun, I think, for people who've never seen the show. I'd totally be sold on the show if this was the first thing I ever saw of it. But then I'm also a little disturbed.
(My only gripe is that the aspect ratio appears to be 4:3 when it should be 16:9, so things are a little squashed. Alternatively, you can download at the vidder's site and watch it with VLC, which lets you fix the aspect ratio.)
God I love VLC. Codecs suck, and VLC lets me not worry about them.
