Doctor Who!
I liked Donna a lot, but wasn't really super-invested in her, so I could appreciate the tragedy of her ending without it making me want to punch RTD in the neck. For the record, I was so over-invested in Rose that I *couldn't watch* the S2 finale for, like, six months (I was spoiled about Billie Piper leaving). I *get* over-investment.
It is awful to take the whole thing away from her. At least with Rose, even though I hated how heartbroken she was, you knew that she wasn't the same 19-year-old shopgirl she'd been, and she knew it too. That Donna is back to thinking she's just a temp is really tragic, and really unfair. I can't help but think there had to be a better ending for her. At least Owen and Tosh got to go out fighting.
Anyway. Freema still can't act, and it still keeps me from liking Martha as much as I otherwise would. But yay, Mickey! And Jack! Not enough Ianto and Gwen, but then having them at all was an unexpected treat, so I can't really complain.
So Rose. And Ten-lite. I have maintained always that I don't want anything but platonic Doctor/Rose, but apparently that's a lie. The aspect of their relationship that I've always been invested in, though, is how broken he was at the start of the new series and how much they needed each other. He needed Donna, too, but he needed Rose first. In my ideal world it would be Rose and the Doctor and Donna (and occasionally Sarah Jane and Jack and hey, Ianto too) skipping around time and space together; since I wasn't going to get that, a mortal version of the Doctor - a mortal, Nine-ish version of the Doctor - who can be with Rose on human terms? Who needs her like Nine needed her? Is apparently the happy ending (and closure) I didn't know I needed. Fanwank, sure, but I'm perfectly happy to be the intended recipient of fanwank for a change. Really, that NEVER HAPPENS. (Sadfax of being a slasher.)
(But. Ten having to walk away again - knowing he was going to be losing Donna as well - is completely fucking heartbreaking.)
And now off year of specials only. :(
