i am recording our history now on the bedroom wall

Hey! So for the record I don't think lj's going anywhere anytime soon. But in the spirit of you never know, and backups always being a good idea regardless of sky-is-falling circumstances, for Mac users:

LJ Migrate
-This looks scary, as it involves python and the terminal, but the directions are excellent and the actual implementation is painless, I promise. I know nothing about Terminal and I've never had problems. And it backs up comments (and userpics!). And you can use it to move all your content over to insanejournal or journalfen or wherever if you should so choose.

Xjournal
-Less scary, but not as useful, and it doesn't back up comments. After you download and have logged into your account, go to Window, select History, and then Refresh to sync. I think the download option just downloads a big xml file, which - I have no idea what you would do with that, actually.

Windows users:

Backing up your LJ: a guide for Windows users
-Explains how to use ljarchive, which is awesome and downloads comments and all that good functional stuff, and also lj-sec, which you can use to transfer your lj contents over to another journal. Lj-sec is actually what I use to back up to my insanejournal and it works really well.

Yes, I have both a Mac and a PC. MACS ARE BETTER. I feel really comfortable expressing this obviously correct opinion.

EDIT: via [livejournal.com profile] tree, if you want to back up your lj on wordpress, here's a community that tells you how! [livejournal.com profile] lj2wordpress

Uggghhhhh I am so exhausted and it's only Tuesday. :( It's wintry mix-ing out, and I am sad. I know it's the grass is greener effect but I am almost convinced that I liked it better when my winters were five to ten degrees colder on the average day but at least there wasn't always slush falling from the sky. When I first moved here and saw the first forecast for a wintry mix I was all ha ha, that's hilariously lame. And then I experienced one, and then I experienced four winters full of them, and now I am on my fifth and it's miserable, okay. It's cold in the worst way, and it sucks to drive in (sucks WAY WORSE than driving in snow, WHEN WILL PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT ON THE SCALE OF SCARY ICE>SNOW, ALWAYS) and there are still three more months of it to get through and :( is all I can say to that.

BUT tomorrow I'm not going in to work until nine! And I'm still going to leave at four-thirty, or rather ACTUALLY leave at four-thirty instead of an hour later like I have the last two days, and then I'm going to go to my mom's and work out and get hugs and I will >:( at the sky until it caves to my will and gives me sunshine, and it's gonna be awesome. AWESOME.

wait, what's supposed to happen to LJ?

i really think there needs to be a way for them to print it all out for you. i'd totally pay for that.

There's this: http://www.ljbook.com/frontpage.php which turns it into a pdf file that you could print out yourself if you wanted - just don't try right now, since that's what everyone's doing.

Hmm... That's interesting. I wonder if the ljbook thingy also preserves comments? I really want to save those, too. I've bookmarked the scary LJ Migrate one; my brain doesn't feel like tackling Terminal tonight. Hell, I've used Macintoshes for almost as long as they've been around so I don't have to do command line stuff.

Pet peeve time: When PC users refer to them as "MACs" or "the MAC format" and such. It's not an acronym. It's Mac, short for Macintosh, the end. Or maybe it is an acronym and we just weren't told. My Awesome Computer. Midgets Are Cool. Microwave Amplified Cows. My Aardvark Creamed?

I don't know if ljbook saves comments, but I suspect not. And it's only two lines in terminal! Two lines you cut and paste directly from the instructions! The thing I love about Macs is that they're pretty hard to screw up. Aside from all the other stuff I love about them, I mean.

I always assume they're talking about something else entirely when I read it referred to as MAC! Huh, I didn't even know people did that.

Lies! I checked, and ljbook does back up comments. :)

Yeah, it's a holdover from the old days. Windows users evolved from PC (which were mostly made by IBM) users who used DOS. Even when Windows came about, the file extensions were still prevalent: .DOC, .TXT, .GIF, .JPG, .WAV, etc. The people on that side of the fence got used to everything being short little three-character acronyms. So when they would try to talk about Macintosh files or just the platform in general, they'd often call them MAC things. Most still do. Bugs the poop out of me.

Then along came .MP3 files...

Good point! I made the assumption that everyone is like me and would cling to an lj-like journaling system until they've all been run into the ground, but I can think of at least a few people on my flist who might actually prefer wordpress.

i like the lj-like systems in theory, but not so much in practice. on the other hand, i have my own website with wordpress already installed and i know how to use it. i've also been a member of that community since, um, strikethrough? and i still haven't actually done anything about it. there does seem to be enough interest that there's pretty much a widget for wordpress for everything you can do on lj - except the friends list/communities part. which, frankly, is the primary draw for me and won't exist no matter where i go. it is rather a good idea to back up, though. meh.

damn you lj! *shakes fist*
